Litter density, mapped.
Litterli is a camera unit for street-cleaning equipment and push carts. It counts cigarette butts and other litter on the pavement and turns every route into a map of litter density you can compare over time.
Streets get cleaned without knowing which are dirtiest
Cigarette butts are one of the most commonly littered items in the world. Their filters are made of cellulose acetate, a plastic that takes years to break down and leaches nicotine and other toxins into soil and water.
Yet most cities can't say which streets are worst, or whether a new bin, a campaign or an extra cleaning round made a difference. Counting by hand is slow, and a raw count depends on how far someone walked.
Litterli reports density instead, such as cigarette butts per 100 m² on a given street segment and date. That makes streets, weeks and cleaning methods objectively comparable.
Two ways onto the street
On a push cart
A light cart that one person walks along pavements, squares and pedestrian streets. Suited to surveys, pilots and places cleaning equipment can't reach.
On street-cleaning equipment
Mounted on sweepers or other cleaning equipment you already run, Litterli surveys streets during normal cleaning rounds, with no extra trips and no extra staff.
How it works
- 01
Record
As the cart or equipment moves, the camera photographs the pavement from above and logs exactly how far it has travelled, along with its coordinates.
- 02
Detect
Image recognition finds cigarette butts and other litter in every frame and counts each item once.
- 03
Map
Results become litter density per street segment on a map, ready to compare between streets and dates.
Looks at the pavement, not at people
The camera points straight down and sees only a narrow strip of pavement. Faces and number plates practically never enter the frame, which makes Litterli far simpler to use in public space than a street-facing camera.
Built for the people who keep streets clean
- Cities and municipalities
- See which streets need attention, plan cleaning on evidence and show whether measures worked.
- Street-cleaning contractors
- Turn the routes you already drive into data, and show clients the results of your work.
- Producer responsibility organisations
- Get consistent, comparable measurements of tobacco and packaging litter where producers share cleanup costs.
- Researchers and environmental groups
- Collect repeatable, location-based litter data for studies and campaigns.
